From Uncertainty to Insight: My BOS Internship Experience

BOS

Maya Khimji, British Omani Society Intern, June 2025

My internship has come to an end, with many skills gained, and many challenges overcome, I thank the team at the British Omani Society with utmost gratitude for the guidance and support I received over the last month:

As a newly graduated student who like most 23-year-olds, was unsure of what they may want to pursue in the future, I was referred to the British Omani Society. As an Omani who has lived in the UK for the past five years, I thought it would be a perfect place to gain experience, however, I didn’t realise until writing this, how perfect it really was.

Marketing was not a skill that came easily to me, I wasn’t the most creative person, however, I wanted to take the opportunity to gain expertise that was outside of my comfort zone. A skill like marketing, whether we realize it or not, is an expertise that is needed in all industries.

During my internship, I aided the BOS team in marketing many events, enabling me to gain communications experience. These included a really diverse bunch of events, from a presentation by Oman Sail on their “SailFree” parasailing initiative, to an artists’ gathering, and high-level business networking reception. I even got to interview speakers and create a Q&A video for the first time, which involved many new skills, such as designing interview questions, learning a new software programme, and editing video footage.  By doing so, I also experienced an entirely new skill; event planning.

Event planning was possibly the most challenging but exciting experience throughout the internship. I was able to see first-hand the thought and coordination that goes into organising events, that reflects the BOS’s values and goals. From logistics to comms, I learned a lot in a short amount of time, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work. However, none of this would have been possible without the impeccable support from the BOS team.

From the first day I walked into the office, they welcomed me with open arms. Without them, I would not have succeeded and gained the knowledge and experience I did. As the first female director of the BOS, Rosa made my experience what it was; insightful, worthwhile, and all-around perfect.

One thing about being an intern that is sometimes worrying is our lack of knowledge, and sometimes asking too many questions is scary. But the team showed me that being curious and wanting to learn is important. We sometimes are scared to be overbearing, but Rosa, Tia, and Talal were always open to any questions, no matter how silly they may be. I never imagined coming across a workplace that provided me with such support and opportunity to gain experience and knowledge in a meaningful way.

In essence, if you are seeking to gain experience for your future, whether it may be in marketing, communications, event planning, or even in general, and you hope for a supportive, caring and knowledgeable team; BOS is the place for you!
