Arabic Language Scheme

The British Omani Society, with generous support from the Omani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is pleased to announce 10 full scholarships for a period of intensive Arabic study in Oman each year, June to August.

Arabic Language Scheme (ALS)

The Arabic Language Scheme (ALS) offers a unique opportunity for British nationals with mid-intermediate Arabic language skills to spend eight weeks developing their Arabic proficiency at the Sultan Qaboos College for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers in Manah, Oman, approximately 20 minutes from the historic city of Nizwa.

Designed for recent graduates and young professionals, the programme enables participants to strengthen their language skills, deepen their understanding of Omani culture, and build lasting academic and professional connections.

What the Scheme Includes

The Arabic Language Scheme is fully funded, allowing participants to focus on making the most of their experience. The programme includes:

Five hours of daily Arabic tuition, focused primarily on Modern Standard Arabic, alongside classes and practical language exchange sessions in the Omani dialect.
Full-board accommodation at the student hostel attached to the College.
Return flights between the UK and Oman.
Visa and travel insurance costs.
A weekly allowance to help cover day-to-day living expenses.

The allowance is also intended to cover meals during periods when the College cafeteria is closed, such as school or national holidays.

Cultural Experience in Oman

Alongside intensive language study, participants have the opportunity to experience Oman’s rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes. The programme includes organised excursions and outdoor activities, with visits to Oman’s mountains, deserts, and coastline, as well as historic destinations such as Nizwa. These experiences provide valuable insight into Oman’s history, environment, and people.

Eligibility and Applications

We welcome applications from British nationals with mid-intermediate Arabic language skills, particularly recent graduates and young professionals. Successful applicants should demonstrate:

A genuine interest in Oman and the wider Gulf region.
Enthusiasm, initiative, and leadership potential.
A strong interest in Arabic language, culture, and history.
An academic foundation in Arabic at a mid-intermediate level or above.

Please note that applicants must hold a UK passport. All successful applicants will be required to become members of the British Omani Society (annual membership fee currently £25). Participants who successfully complete the programme automatically become members of the BOS Alumni Network, providing ongoing opportunities to stay connected with fellow participants and the Society.
