Bold Beginnings and Bittersweet Goodbyes: My Year at the British Omani Society

BOS

Tia Chevasson, Events and Programming Executive June 2024/25

After a year as the Events and Programming Executive at the British Omani Society, I’m saying goodbye — and reflecting on what has easily been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life.

It was my first full-time job, and it couldn’t have been a better fit. As someone who grew up in Oman, working in a role so closely tied to the country felt like coming full circle. This job gave me opportunities I never imagined I’d experience so early in my career — opportunities that connected my personal history with my professional aspirations.

I travelled to Oman for 10 days to support our projects on the ground. I worked closely with both the British Embassy in Muscat and the Omani Embassy in London.

I had the honour of attending an event with His Royal Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Crown Prince of Oman, and HRH Prince William, Crown Prince of the United Kingdom.

I met senior officials and policymakers, including chief trade negotiators, moments that left me inspired by the depth and complexity of UK-Oman relations. I also improved my Arabic by engaging directly with Omani delegates, coaches, and colleagues — something that meant a lot to me personally.

In this role, I developed skills that I’ll carry with me forever — from building relationships with diplomats, corporate leaders, scientists, lawyers, and academics, to contributing to our social media and marketing content in Oman. I organised high-level events, including our flagship annual forum, attended by ministers from both countries.

I also got to hear incredible personal stories from long-time friends of Oman — from discovering oil in the 1960s to tales of cross-cultural friendships that still shape ties today. One unforgettable moment was visiting the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office — a dream for me as the granddaughter of a diplomat.

And best of all? I had the opportunity to work with an incredible team.

To anyone considering joining BOS — as a member, intern, delegate, or staff — do it. If you’re passionate about international relations, Oman, or simply making meaningful connections, this is the place to start. You’ll grow, learn, and experience more than you can imagine.

It’s hard to leave a place that’s given me so much. But I’m taking these memories, lessons, and friendships with me — and I’ll always be a proud member of this community.

With gratitude,

Tia
