John McKeown is a Vice President of The Society. He was previously Vice Chairman of the Society Trustees for two years until 2023 and edited the Society's Annual Review which is published in September. He is also a member of the committee of the Sultan’s Armed Forces Association, having served in SAF during the Dhofar War. His dissertation during an MPhil course in international relations at Cambridge University, Britain and Oman: the Dhofar War and its Significance, has been reprinted by official establishments in the UK, USA and Oman, but not published.
He joined the regular Army in 1966, having been in the Territorial Army while sub-editor of The Western Morning News, and served in Germany, Belize and Northern Ireland as well as home postings. He retired as Senior Military Office of the MOD’s research and development establishments in 1996 and joined Vickers for a career in industry before returning to university to read for an MA in modern history. He is married with six children, two of whom live overseas in South Africa and the USA.
