Last Tuesday, my colleague Michelle and I travelled to Oxford for a series of meetings and an opportunity to explore the Middle East Centre Archive at St Antony’s College. It turned out to be a particularly worthwhile visit, offering fresh ideas for collaboration and a clearer sense of the resources available for our work.
Exploring the Archive
We began the day at the Middle East Centre, where archivist Debbie Usher welcomed us and introduced the collections. The archive holds an impressive range of materials relating to Oman and to the historical activities of The British Omani Society. These include photographs, recordings, correspondence, and documents that together provide a detailed record of political, social, and cultural life in Oman across the decades.
It quickly became clear that these collections are an exceptional resource for anyone interested in the development of the UK-Oman relationship. As we moved through the material, we found ourselves discussing several possibilities: how these resources might be incorporated into the Society’s Golden Jubilee activities, and how we could help make the collections more accessible to researchers and the wider public.
Discussions with Centre Leadership
Later in the morning, we met with Professor Eugene Rogan and Professor Michael Willis. Our conversation ranged widely, from encouraging greater uptake of summer and year-abroad Arabic study in Oman, to identifying potential areas for academic collaboration. Both were enthusiastic about strengthening ties between the Society and Oxford, and the discussion generated several ideas that we hope to develop further.
Return to the Archive
In the afternoon, we returned to the archive to talk through practical matters with Debbie. This included digitisation, how gaps in the collections might be addressed, and what more could be done to raise awareness of the archive among researchers and the public. Debbie was extremely open to collaboration, and the conversation was both constructive and energising.
Looking Ahead
We left Oxford with a long list of possibilities – perhaps more than we expected when we boarded the early train – and we look forward to sharing updates with members as these ideas begin to take shape.
In the meantime, I would strongly encourage anyone with an interest in Oman, whether academic or personal, to visit the Middle East Centre Archive. It is an outstanding resource, and one that deserves far more attention.

يوم الثلاثاء الماضي، سافرتُ أنا وزميلتي ميشيل إلى مدينة أوكسفورد لحضور سلسلة من الاجتماعات، وللاطلاع على أرشيف مركز الشرق الأوسط في كلية سانت أنطوني. وقد تبيّن سريعاً أن الزيارة كانت مثمرة على نحوٍ خاص، إذ أمدّتنا بأفكار جديدة للتعاون، ومنحتنا فهماً أوضح لحجم الموارد المتاحة لدعم عملنا.
استكشاف الأرشيف
بدأنا يومنا في مركز الشرق الأوسط، حيث رحّبت بنا أمينة الأرشيف ديبي آشر وقدّمت لنا تعريفاً بالمجموعات المحفوظة. ويضم الأرشيف مجموعة غنية ومتنوّعة من المواد المتعلقة بسلطنة عُمان وبالأنشطة التاريخية للجمعية البريطانية العُمانية، من بينها صور فوتوغرافية، وتسجيلات صوتية، ومراسلات، ووثائق رسمية تسهم مجتمعة في تقديم سجلٍّ تفصيلي للحياة السياسية والاجتماعية والثقافية في عُمان على مدى عقود.
وسرعان ما اتّضح لنا أن هذه المجموعات تمثّل مورداً استثنائياً لكل من يهتم بتطوّر العلاقات بين المملكة المتحدة وسلطنة عُمان. وأثناء اطّلاعنا على المواد، ناقشنا عدداً من الإمكانات، من بينها سُبل إدماج هذه الموارد في أنشطة اليوبيل الذهبي للجمعية، وكيف يمكن العمل على إتاحة المجموعات بشكل أوسع للباحثين وللجمهور العام.
لقاءات مع إدارة المركز
في وقت لاحق من الصباح، التقينا بالأستاذ يوجين روغن والأستاذ مايكل ويليس. وتناول النقاش مجموعة واسعة من الموضوعات، شملت تشجيع الإقبال على برامج دراسة اللغة العربية الصيفية وسنوات الدراسة في الخارج في عُمان، إضافةً إلى استكشاف مجالات محتملة للتعاون الأكاديمي. وقد أبدى كلاهما حماساً واضحاً لتعزيز الروابط بين الجمعية وجامعة أوكسفورد، وأسفر اللقاء عن عدد من الأفكار التي نأمل في تطويرها خلال المرحلة المقبلة.
العودة إلى الأرشيف
في فترة بعد الظهر، عدنا إلى الأرشيف لمناقشة الجوانب العملية مع ديبي، بما في ذلك آليات الرقمنة، وسبل معالجة الثغرات في المجموعات القائمة، وما يمكن القيام به لزيادة الوعي بالأرشيف لدى الباحثين والجمهور. وقد كانت ديبي منفتحة للغاية على التعاون، وجاءت المناقشة بنّاءة ومفعمة بالحيوية.
نظرة إلى المستقبل
غادرنا أوكسفورد ونحن نحمل قائمة طويلة من الأفكار — ربما أطول مما توقّعنا عند استقلالنا القطار في الصباح الباكر — ونتطلع إلى مشاركة الأعضاء بالمستجدات مع بدء تبلور هذه الأفكار وتحولها إلى مبادرات ملموسة.
وفي هذه الأثناء، أشجّع بشدة كل من لديه اهتمام بعُمان، سواء أكان اهتماماً أكاديمياً أم شخصياً، على زيارة أرشيف مركز الشرق الأوسط. فهو مورد متميّز بحق، ويستحق قدراً أكبر بكثير من الاهتمام.
وأخيراً، إذا كان لديكم أي مواد أرشيفية تتعلق بعُمان وترغبون في ضمان الحفاظ عليها على المدى الطويل، فنحثّكم على التواصل مع الأرشيف. فالإسهامات من هذا النوع تسهم في صون السجلّ التاريخي وإتاحته للأجيال القادمة.
