Student Volunteers Report from Oman: Bo Wakely

BOS

December 18 2024

As the current Student Volunteers Oman scheme draws to a close, we share a report from one of our volunteers Bo Wakely.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a fully funded chance to visit the Sultanate, learn about Oman's rich culture and develop new skills, then we hope this will give you a good idea about the scheme and inspire you to sign up in the future! The next call for applications will be opening in January 2025.

My name is Bo Wakley and I have just finished my A-levels in English Language, Business and History. During my three months in Oman, I have had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself into the rich culture and history of the country, which has been enlightening, both personally and academically. I have always had a deep interest in the Middle East, so the Student Volunteer Programme was the perfect way to explore the Omani culture which was both unfamiliar and fascinating to me. Omani culture, with its warm hospitality, deep rooted traditions and stunning landscapes, proved to be the most wonderful experience that any 18 year old would not be able to turn down.

During my time at the Sultans School, I have had the opportunity to support teachers across a variety of subjects, including Maths, English and Science, with students ranging from Year 1 to Year 4. In addition to classroom assistance, I also helped with PE, swimming and music. I also volunteered at After School Sports Tournaments, where I encouraged the Skittleball team to perform to their best during competitions at other schools, managing the team at the Swimathon event and refereeing for Bench Ball matches. It was incredibly rewarding to witness the U11 girls’ Skittleball team and the U9 boys’ Bench Ball team both secure 1st first place finishes, which made the experience even more memorable.

Twice a week, I worked closely with the Year 6 to Year 9 Scholars, offering academic guidance with homework and improving their vocabulary through regular testing. Outside of academics, I connected with the IB students in the boarding house, spending time playing pool, table tennis and various card games. On the weekends, we had the chance to explore many of Oman's stunning landmarks, such as mountains, deserts, beaches and wadis. My favourite activity was trekking through the wadis because I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of swimming, walking, climbing and jumping. Wadi Qurai was my favourite experience because we navigated our way across the rocks to reach a secluded pool. The encouragement and support from the other volunteers on the scheme as I was climbing up the rock to jump into the pool, made this experience even more memorable. In contrast, we had a very laid-back outing to Nizwa which is full of tradition and history with the Fort and the Walls. We stayed in both the ‘Antique Inn’ and the ‘Bustan Inn’ which were perfectly near the centre of everything with markets and the BEST peach iced tea. The 30° weather was a lovely bonus!

During my time in Oman, I not only formed strong connections with teachers and students, but also with the service staff, which highlights the warm and welcoming atmosphere that surrounded me. Initially, I felt out of my comfort zone because every aspect of this journey was unfamiliar, however through the kindness and hospitality, it did not take long to call Oman a ‘home away from home’. The students’ constant smiles and waves, along with their positive approach to learning left a lasting impression. Their eagerness to involve me in all learning along with the greetings of cuddles and high fives I received as I entered the Year One and Three classrooms was one of the most heartwarming aspects of my time in Oman. I look forward to sharing this remarkable country with friends and family in the future, so they too can experience the best adventure of my life thus far.

This scheme has helped me become more open-minded and attuned to new cultures, especially after experiencing Omani national holidays, celebrations and new ways of eating and living. I have also had the privilege to share my culture and experiences with others due to the inclusivity of this wonderful country, particularly through events such as International Day. I will always be grateful for this incredible opportunity because it has allowed me to meet some of the most inspiring and welcoming people. It has also fuelled a deeper passion for international travel and possibly teaching abroad. As a result, I have decided to pursue International Business at University in the upcoming academic year.

My advice to anyone considering applying for this scheme is to approach it with an open mind and embrace each moment, because time passes quickly. The hardest part for me has been knowing I have to leave so soon after feeling immensely welcomed at the Sultans School. Make sure to say yes to every opportunity that comes your way- life is an adventure, and Oman, with all its hidden gems, has given me the best experience of my life so far!
