Sixteen Master’s students from the Diplomatic Studies Programme at the University of Oxford had the opportunity to visit Oman in July, a journey made possible by the generosity of the Sultanate. The British Omani Society sponsorsed three British students to embark on this enriching experience. The hospitality and meticulous organisation provided by Asaad Abd Al Rahman, Reem Al Balushi, and Mohammed Al Siyabi ensured that our experience was truly memorable. Our visit offered us profound insights into Oman’s culture, diplomacy, and economic ambitions.

The trip reinforced the deep ties between Oman, the UK, and Oxford, embodied by the fact that Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said and other prominent Omani diplomats are alumni of our program. This journey offered us valuable insights on Oman’s role as a peaceful mediator in the Gulf region, fostering stability and cooperation amid regional challenges.

A Glimpse into Oman’s Heritage

Our  exploration of Oman’s cultural and historical heritage began at the Oman Across Ages Museum. The museum was the perfect starting point to capture Oman’s rich history, showcasing its role as a key player in global trade and its evolution into a modern, forward-looking nation. Remarkably pioneering was Oman’s ability to balance modernisation with a strong commitment to preserving its traditions. This blend of progress and tradition is a hallmark of Oman’s development approach.

The long-standing partnership between Oman and the UK shone through the museum’s exhibitions, spotlighting the importance of collaboration in areas like education, technology, and sustainability. The visit beautifully highlighted how Oman’ international partnerships not only prepare for future challenges but continue to drive progress for an exciting future.

Exploring the Heights of Al Jabal Al Akhdar

From Muscat, we ventured into Al Jabal Al Akhdar, a stunning mountainous region where the landscape offers a dramatic contrast to the city. In this peaceful, awe-inspiring setting, we learned about local agricultural traditions. The Rummana community shop reminded us how ancient practices, such as pomegranates trade—remain integral to the local economy and culture.

From culture to nature, we were honoured to spend time with the inspiring Outward Bound Oman. This visionary program focuses on developing leadership skills through outdoor challenges, fostering resilience and teamwork in young Omanis. It became clear that initiatives like these are part of Oman’s broader commitment investing in its youth, preparing them to lead the nation into the future.

One of the most unforgettable moments was watching the sunset over the rugged mountains of Al Jabal Al Akhdar. Dining in a small village surrounded by terraced farms provided a glimpse into how the people of this region have lived harmoniously with the land for generations. The landscape’s beauty, coupled with the warmth of local hospitality, left a lasting impression on us all.

Muscat: Diplomacy and Development

In Muscat, we had the privilege of visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where we engaged in enlightening discussions with Omani diplomats. Oman’s commitment to peace and neutrality, along with its role as a mediator in regional conflicts, enables it to foster stability and cooperation in the Gulf. We were struck by how Oman’s diplomatic philosophy emphasises the importance of balanced relationships with all its neighbours, a key factor in maintaining peace across a divided region.

At InvestOMAN, we learned the ambitious Vision 2040, which aims to diversify Oman’s economy through innovation and sustainability. The focus on sectors like tourism, education, technology, and renewable energy demonstrated Oman’s forward-thinking approach. We were inspired by the country’s commitment to building partnerships with global allies as it pursues these goals.

Our visit to the Royal Academy of Management highlighted Oman’s dedication to leadership development. The Academy’s mission prepares Omani professionals to lead the nation reflecting the broader theme of our visit: Oman’s investment in its people is at the heart of its long-term development strategy.

A Warm Welcome

The visit concluded with a memorable evening hosted by Ambassador Abdullah Saleh Al Saadi, who shared his insights into Oman’s diplomatic approach and its role in promoting regional peace. His hospitality and our engaging conversations about Oman’s diplomatic priorities deepened our appreciation for the country’s values and its unique contributions to regional stability.

We are sincerely grateful to the Omani Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for making this visit possible. The experience broadened our academic and personal insights. We look forward to nurturing the friendships and partnerships that emerged during this unforgettable journey. These connections will continue to nurture understanding and cooperation between Oman, the UK, and our diverse group, representing thirteen different nations, paving the way for a collaborative future opportunities.
