About the lecture
Coinciding with the IMF’s latest regional assessment, the session will provide an overview of Oman’s evolving economic landscape, examining recent macroeconomic developments, diversification progress, and the global dynamics shaping the Sultanate’s medium- and long-term growth trajectory. The discussion will also highlight emerging opportunities for investors, policymakers, and businesses engaged in or considering engagement with Oman.
Hamid’s talk will be followed by an interactive Q&A session, moderated by BOS Vice‑Chair Chris Breeze, offering attendees an opportunity to engage directly on the themes discussed. This event is ideal for anyone interested in Oman’s economic direction - whether from a business, policy, academic, or investment perspective.
About the speaker
Hamid Hamirani is a distinguished finance and investment professional with over 20 years of experience in Oman’s public and private sector. In addition to his role as Founder and Managing Director of BSG International, Hamid leads the Smart Industry Initiative at The British Omani Society, a technology‑transfer platform linking UK innovators with Omani industrial partners to promote sustainable, technology‑enabled growth.
He served as a Senior Advisor to the Minister of Finance in Oman, playing a critical role in transforming sovereign wealth funds, including the Oman Investment Fund where he was an Investment Committee member. The fund later merged with the State General Reserve Fund to form the Oman Investment Authority in 2020.
He is also a recognised commentator on economic policy and investment trends, contributing regularly through his “Collection of Thoughts” blog and having authored a chapter in the Global Innovation Index 2020 on sovereign wealth funds and innovation investing.
In 2016, he co-authored a seminal paper with Professor Jerome Angel of UC Berkley, arguing that investments in technology foster sustainable economic growth more effectively than fiscal or monetary stimulus – a perspective validated by global economic trends since the financial crisis of 2008 and COVID-19 in 2020.
