Musandam: A Snapshot in Time by Peter Sichel

About the lecture

Peter Sichel completed five operational tours in Dhofar with the SAS in the early 1970s before being commissioned in the Sultan of Oman’s Army.  He served in Firqat Force until the end of the insurgency, when he transferred to the Civil Aid Department with particular responsibility for the development of the jebel and distribution of civil aid.

Last year Peter spoke about his experiences in Dhofar and his interaction with the Jebali and Dhofari people. Following his work in Dhofar Peter was appointed Director of Operations of the Musandam Development Committee. During that time he conducted a demographic survey of the (then) Province of Musandam, the record of which is held by the Middle East Centre at St Antony’s College, Oxford. The photographs of this 4-year period at the start of the 1980s in this rugged, isolated northern extremity of Oman form the basis for his talk.
