Dr. Syed Mohammed Rafay: A Life of Selfless Service in the Sultanate of Oman

Join Dr. Akbar Rafay to discuss his new book devoted to his father: "Dr. Syed Mohammed Rafay: A Life of Selfless Service in the Sultanate of Oman."

This book presents the remarkable story of Dr. Syed Mohammed Rafay, who came to Oman in the late 1950's from his native India and dedicated his life to providing medical services to a country that had been locked in a state of perpetual underdevelopment. Fortunately, he maintained diaries. These served as an inexhaustible supply of information from which his son, Dr. Akbar Rafay, was able to chronicle his father's incredible journey, from establishing his first medical clinic in Sumail in 1958 to being appointed as personal physician to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, and entrusted with the care of his mother, Her Majesty A’Sayeeda Al Jalila Mazoon.

The presentation will be illustrated by slides which include some of the personal, poignant and historically fascinating images and documents included in the book, many of which were not previously publicly available.

Dr. Amna Coxon, consultant physician and neurologist, will also participate in the presentation.

The talk will be followed by a Q&A moderated by BOS Vice President Robert Alston, who served as Ambassador in Oman between 1986 and 1990.

A limited number of copies of the book will be available to purchase at the subsidised price of £50 during the event (cash payments only please). Money raised from the book sales will go to charity.

This is a free members event, please book in advance.
